About Athlone, Edmonton
Athlone is a residential community in northwest Edmonton, offering a blend of schools, shops, and industrial areas while maintaining a quiet neighborhood feel. The western section, known as Dunvegan, is named after the former Dunvegan Yards railway depot. Nearby neighborhoods include Wellington, Calder, and Sherbrooke.
Annexed to Edmonton in 1913, Athlone remained largely undeveloped until the 1950s. Its modified grid street layout is characteristic of that era. Single-family homes dominate the area, with some low-density multi-family housing. Commercial activity is mainly along 127 Street. A newer development, Bellwether Park, has introduced a variety of modern housing options. The neighborhood is named after Alexander Augustus, Earl of Athlone, Canada’s Governor General from 1940 to 1946.
