About Carlton, Edmonton
Carlton is a neighbourhood in northwest Edmonton. It was originally used for agriculture, and in the late 1970s, the southern part saw some industrial activity. While a few homes were built in the 1990s, most residential development began in the early 2000s and is still ongoing.
The community is primarily low-density, featuring single and semi-detached homes. Some medium-density housing is also planned for the southwest. Carlton includes several natural areas, such as a woodlot in the northwest. A centrally located stormwater management facility provides open space and amenities for residents, making the neighbourhood more inviting.
The name Carlton follows the Palisades area tradition of using fur trade forts as inspiration. It comes from Fort Carlton, a Hudson’s Bay Company trading post established in 1798 near the junction of the North and South Saskatchewan Rivers. This fort played a crucial role in western trade and commerce.
