About Elsinore, Edmonton
Elsinore is a residential neighbourhood in the Castle Downs Extension area of northwest Edmonton. It is bordered by Anthony Henday Drive to the north, 97th Street to the east, 106th Street to the west, and 173rd Avenue to the south. Residential construction began in the late 1980s and continued into the early 2000s, with only a few undeveloped parcels remaining. Before urban development, the land was primarily used for agriculture.
The neighbourhood features a linear park and pathway system that runs diagonally along a pipeline corridor. A stormwater management pond in the southern section serves as both a functional and recreational space. Residential development is predominantly low density, with homes arranged along loops and cul-de-sacs, offering separation from arterial roadways. A site has been reserved for a future school and park complex in the center of the Elsinore and Chambery neighbourhoods.
A small commercial area is located on Elsinore’s eastern border, while convenient access to 97th Street connects residents to various commercial, institutional, and employment centers throughout north Edmonton.
Like other Castle Downs neighbourhoods, Elsinore is named after a famous European castle. Elsinore Castle in Denmark, known from Shakespeare’s *Hamlet*, was built between 1574 and 1584 in the Dutch Renaissance style. It has served various purposes over the centuries and was fully restored in the late 1920s.
