About Garneau, Edmonton
Garneau is one of Edmonton’s oldest inner-city neighbourhoods, dating back to the early 1900s. Originally part of the City of Strathcona, it became fully developed by the time of Edmonton’s 1912 amalgamation. Named after Métis settler Laurent Garneau, who arrived in 1874, the area has since evolved significantly.
The expansion of the University of Alberta and the Whyte Avenue commercial district has transformed Garneau’s housing landscape. While some original single-family homes remain, much of the area now features row housing, apartments, and university residences. With a vibrant mix of historic charm and urban convenience, Garneau is a dynamic, sought-after community.
