About Griesbach, Edmonton
Griesbach is a north Edmonton neighbourhood bordered by 153rd Avenue, 97th Street, 137th Street, and Castle Downs Road. Originally developed as a Canadian Forces Base in the 1950s, it housed military personnel and their families.
In the mid-1990s, the Canadian Forces consolidated several bases, including Griesbach. Its location and infrastructure made it ideal for redevelopment, and the site was transferred to Canada Lands Company. The goal was to create a mixed-use community that preserved existing trees, honored military history, and featured diverse housing options.
Redevelopment began in 2002 and continues today. Griesbach includes single-detached, semi-detached, row housing, and apartments. It was among the first Edmonton neighbourhoods to allow garage suites and reverse housing, with part of it serving as a LEED ND pilot. A central park, waterway, and pathway system enhance recreation. The southeast hosts a commercial village, the northwest features a senior’s residence, and a mixed-use TOD area is proposed for the southwest. Street and park names reflect its military past.
Griesbach is named after Major General William Antrobus Griesbach (1878-1945), a veteran of the Boer War and WWI, Edmonton’s youngest mayor in 1907, and a Canadian senator who earned a major general commission for his war service.
