About Grovenor, Edmonton
Grovenor is a well-established neighborhood in Edmonton’s west end, with development dating back to the 1910s. Growth occurred in phases, influenced by the pre-WWI land boom, railway expansion, and the extension of streetcar service. While most of the neighborhood follows a grid pattern, the McKinnon Ravine shaped the layout of some lots near its edge.
Single-detached homes dominate Grovenor, though redevelopment has introduced duplexes and low-rise apartments since the 1960s. Infill projects continue to add variety to the neighborhood’s housing options. Commercial services are available along Stony Plain Road and at a shopping center on 149th Street, providing convenient amenities for residents.
One of Grovenor’s standout features is its access to the North Saskatchewan River Valley, with walkways and trails leading into McKinnon Ravine. The neighborhood’s name came into use after World War II, replacing its original designation as Westgrove. The origin of the name Grovenor remains uncertain.
