About Hazeldean, Edmonton
Hazeldean, located east of Mill Creek Ravine, offers easy access to the North Saskatchewan River Valley park system. The neighborhood mostly features bungalow-style single-family homes, with back alleys and a grid road system. Many homes were built in the 1950s, and Hazeldean is currently undergoing redevelopment with new infill homes replacing older ones.
Originally part of land holdings by I. Irvine, W. Ogilvie, and C. Anderson, Hazeldean became part of Edmonton in 1912 after being annexed by Strathcona in 1907. The neighborhood’s commercial activity mainly serves local residents, though some businesses along 99th Street and 63rd Avenue attract a wider audience. Hazeldean’s name likely comes from the native hazelnut trees in the area, with “dean” referring to a valley or vale.
