About Highlands, Edmonton
The Highlands neighbourhood sits on land that was originally part of River Lots 30, 32, and 34, owned by three Hudson’s Bay Company employees. Since it was three miles from downtown Edmonton, it wasn’t an obvious choice for early development. However, McGrath, Holgate, and Company, a real estate firm, saw its potential. They struck a deal with the city to extend utilities and the electric streetcar line, using subsidies from the developers. This made the area more accessible. The neighbourhood’s name, Highlands, was chosen through a contest, with a $50 prize awarded to the winner.
In 1911, McGrath and Holgate built their mansions on Ada Boulevard, named after McGrath’s wife. Other large homes followed along Ada Boulevard, while smaller houses were built further from the valley. Highlands was annexed to the city in 1912, and a streetcar ran along 112 Avenue from 1912 to 1945. Although the neighbourhood started developing during the 1911 land boom, growth slowed, and many of the remaining lots weren’t built on until the late 1940s and 1950s. Today, Highlands is mostly made up of single-family homes, with some commercial and apartment buildings along 118 Avenue. The neighbourhood is also rich in history, and in 1988, residents established the Highlands Historical Foundation to help preserve its heritage.
