Holyrood, developed in the 1950s, features tree-lined streets with landscaped islands and a mix of older homes and newer infill developments. The neighborhood is bordered by major roads, providing easy access to downtown and the University area.
Most homes are single-detached, with multi-family units near bus routes. A school and community league hall sit at the center, while a small commercial plaza is in the southeast. Bonnie Doon Mall is nearby for additional shopping. Originally named Mount Pleasant and East Edmonton Gardens in 1912, then Balmoral, the area was renamed Holyrood in 1953, likely after Holyrood Abbey in Edinburgh, Scotland.
