About Kirkness, Edmonton
Kirkness is part of the Clareview district, bordered by 153rd Avenue, Victoria Trail, and 144th Avenue. A public utilities corridor on the west separates it from the CNR/LRT line. The nearby Clareview LRT station provides easy access to central and south Edmonton.
Most schools and recreation facilities are in the northern part of the neighbourhood. A local park at 146 Avenue and Kirkness Road honors James A. Christianson, a businessman who supported local sports teams.
Housing consists of single-detached homes, low-rise apartments, row housing, and some semi-detached units. Apartments and townhouses are mainly along Kirkness Road, a major bus route. Development started in the 1970s and was mostly completed by the 2000s.
The neighbourhood is named after James Kirkness, a Scottish immigrant who worked for the Hudson’s Bay Company before retiring to his homestead in River Lot 26.
