McKernan is a desirable neighbourhood near the University of Alberta, popular with students, professors, and healthcare professionals. It features tree-lined streets with a mix of older bungalows and newer infill homes.
Originally part of Strathcona, McKernan joined Edmonton in 1912, but major development began in the 1940s after McKernan Lake was drained. The “Toonerville Trolley” served the area until 1948. Today, the McKernan/Belgravia LRT station offers easy transit access.
Primarily residential, the area consists of single-detached homes with some apartments and a small commercial hub along 76 Avenue. It is named after businessman James McKernan, whose land formed the neighbourhood.
