About Rhatigan Ridge, Edmonton
Rhatigan Ridge is a southwest Edmonton neighbourhood that became part of the city through annexation in 1960. Initially included in a phased development plan, it later became part of the large-scale Riverbend-Terwillegar Heights Outline Plan in 1969, which aimed to accommodate 95,000 residents. The neighbourhood was first subdivided in 1980, but economic uncertainty in the early 1980s led to several small adjustments to the original plan. Most homes in Rhatigan Ridge were built during the decade, with single-detached houses making up the majority, alongside a smaller number of semi-detached homes and row houses.
Riverbend Road serves as the main collector road, running north through the community, while Rhatigan Road East and West act as minor collectors. Inside the neighbourhood, curving streets and cul-de-sacs create a peaceful residential atmosphere. A network of pathways supports walking and biking, making it easy for residents to navigate the area. Just south of Riverbend Road, a high-elevation point offers breathtaking panoramic views, with the ridge extending north from this landmark. The neighbourhood takes its name from Thomas Rhatigan, a longtime area farmer known for his high-quality wheat and oats. He earned the title of World Oat King at Toronto’s Royal Winter Fair in 1953, 1966, and 1970.
