About Sherbrooke, Edmonton
Sherbrooke was first subdivided in 1906 using a grid street pattern but remained undeveloped until after World War II. In the early 1950s, city planner Noel Dant redesigned it using the “neighbourhood unit” concept, making it one of North America’s first subdivisions with a curvilinear street pattern, limited access points, and landscaped walkways focused on schools and community spaces. Apartments were placed along 118 Avenue to align with major transit routes, and the American Society of Planning Officials recognized Sherbrooke as a model for good subdivision design.
The neighbourhood was likely named after Sherbrooke, Quebec, which was named after Sir John Coape Sherbrooke, a British colonial governor in the early 1800s.
