About Westwood, Edmonton
Westwood was annexed by Edmonton in 1910 but remained rural until post-World War II, when single-detached homes were built. The neighbourhood follows a grid street pattern with a central school site. In the 1960s, many homes south of 120 Avenue were replaced with low-rise apartments as NAIT opened nearby.
Until the late 1970s, Westwood was isolated, bordered by Beechmount Cemetery and a quiet section of the Municipal Airport. Infrastructure changes, including the widening of 97 Street, removed some original homes. The conversion of Park Plaza Shopping Centre for NAIT reduced commercial space, but Kingsway Garden Mall remains nearby.
Westwood includes H. A. Grey Public School, the Westwood Sports Arena, religious facilities, and commercial sites. The name’s origin is unclear, but the northern section was once called Northcote.
