About Malmo Plains, Edmonton
Malmo Plains is a predominantly residential neighbourhood that was developed in the 1960s, featuring a mix of single-detached homes, row houses, and apartment buildings. Originally part of the University of Alberta Research Farm, the area derives its name from “malmo” soils, a type of loam found in the region. The name was suggested by Fred Bentley, the former dean of agriculture at the University of Alberta.
Bounded by major roadways and the south LRT extension along 111th Street, Malmo Plains offers convenient access to surrounding amenities such as Southgate Mall. The neighbourhood features a central school and park site with two elementary schools. While there are no commercial sites within Malmo Plains, nearby shopping and services are easily accessible.
The University of Alberta’s married student housing complex, Michener Park, is located at the western end of the neighbourhood. The University of Alberta South Campus and research farm border the area to the north, reinforcing the neighbourhood’s academic and agricultural history.
