About Capilano, Edmonton
Capilano is a well-established neighborhood in Edmonton, known for its scenic location along the North Saskatchewan River and Gold Bar Ravine. Originally subdivided in 1910, the area remained agricultural until urban development began in the 1950s. Capilano was annexed to Edmonton in 1949, and most of its homes were built before 1960.
Primarily a residential neighborhood, Capilano consists almost entirely of single-detached houses, ranging from charming mid-century homes to newer, upscale properties. The area is rich in green spaces, featuring Capilano Park, local parks, and mature tree-lined streets. Residents enjoy convenient access to major roadways like 50th Street and 106th Avenue, connecting them to other parts of the city.
Capilano offers two elementary schools, a community league, and proximity to Capilano Mall in nearby Ottewell. The neighborhood’s name is derived from the Capilano River and Suspension Bridge in North Vancouver, BC, and is based on a Salish word meaning “people of Hiap.”
