About Henderson Estates, Edmonton
Henderson Estates is located within the Riverbend Area Structure Plan (ASP) and forms the southwestern perimeter of the Riverbend ASP. The neighbourhood is bordered by Rabbit Hill Road/Rhatigan Road West to the north, Riverbend Road to the east, the North Saskatchewan River Valley to the west, and a power corporation’s right-of-way to the south.
Before urban development, Henderson Estates was primarily used for agriculture. Most of the neighbourhood’s development took place in the 1980s and 1990s, with the majority of homes being single-detached, complemented by some semi-detached and row housing units. Henderson Park, located at the center of the neighbourhood, serves as a school/park site and is home to the community league facility. The neighbourhood is named after Thomas Henderson, a homesteader in the Riverbend area in the late 19th century. Henderson, who moved to Edmonton in 1880, farmed several homesteads near Rabbit Hill and was known for importing Italian honeybees—reputed to be the first honey bee colony in Edmonton.
