About Kernohan, Edmonton
Kernohan sits south of 137 Avenue and east of Victoria Trail, with Kennedale Ravine forming its southern boundary. To the east, the neighbourhood borders the North Saskatchewan River Valley and Hermitage Park. The area was annexed by Edmonton in 1961 and became part of the Clareview district in 1972. Most of Kernohan’s residential development took place in the 1970s, fueled by Edmonton’s oil-driven economic boom.
Multi-unit housing plays a key role in the neighbourhood, with many row housing developments located along Victoria Trail. About one-third of Kernohan’s homes are townhouses, creating a mix of low- and medium-density housing. At the heart of the community, Kernohan Park and Ann Fitzgerald Catholic Elementary School provide green space and education for local families.
The neighbourhood was named after James Kernohan, an early pioneer, farmer, and coal miner. Originally from Ontario, Kernohan moved to Alberta with his family in 1884. He also operated a grocery store from 1884 to 1899, contributing to the area’s early development.
