About Prince Rupert, Edmonton
Prince Rupert is a triangular neighbourhood within the former Hudson’s Bay Company land reserve. Initially rural, it contained only a farm and a golf course until the post-World War II housing boom transformed it into a residential area. Housing is concentrated around a school and a small commercial plaza, while large-scale commercial and industrial spaces are located west of 119 Street. The eastern portion was once home to military families, and some land was kept clear for recreational use due to its proximity to the Municipal Airport’s runway approach.
The neighbourhood was named after the Prince Rupert Golf Course, operated by the Hudson’s Bay Company between 1930 and 1951. The course, and later the neighbourhood, honored Prince Rupert, the first governor of HBC and nephew of King Charles II, who was granted a royal charter to engage in fur trading in what became known as Rupert’s Land.
