About Westmount, Edmonton
Westmount is a historic Edmonton neighbourhood, originally the homestead of Malcolm Groat, a Hudson Bay Company employee, in 1878. His land was annexed to the city in 1904 and 1910, with development quickly following due to Westmount’s proximity to downtown and the extension of the electric streetcar line along 124 Street. The neighbourhood became a desirable residential area, particularly near Groat Ravine, attracting professionals and affluent residents.
While most low-density homes were built before 1950, apartment developments now make up nearly half of all dwellings, mainly near major roads. Westmount has undergone significant revitalization, with heritage preservation efforts and upgrades to the 124 Street shopping district. The area remains a vibrant mixed-use community with residential, commercial, institutional, and light industrial spaces within walkable distances. The neighbourhood is likely named after Westmount in Montreal.
