About Schonsee, Edmonton
Located in Edmonton’s Lake District, Schonsee is bounded by 167th Avenue, 66th Street, 82nd Street, and 173rd Avenue. Its Neighbourhood Structure Plan was approved in 2002, with development beginning shortly after and still ongoing. The community is designed primarily for residential use, with about two-thirds of the housing planned as low-density and the rest as medium-density, which will be built along collector roads and near parks. A district commercial site is set for the southwest corner, while parks and a stormwater management lake enhance green space.
The eastern third of Schonsee is designated as a special study area with no planned development. As part of the Lake District, Schonsee follows the tradition of naming neighbourhoods after lakes in different languages. Its name comes from the German words “schön” (beautiful) and “See” (lake).
