About Belvedere, Edmonton

Belvedere is a northeast Edmonton neighborhood situated along Fort Road, a historic route that once connected Edmonton to Fort Saskatchewan. Originally part of the village of North Edmonton, it was annexed by Edmonton in 1910 and remained on the city’s outskirts until 1964. Residential development flourished during the 1950s and 1960s, with commercial activity concentrated along Fort Road.
Belvedere’s history is closely tied to the meatpacking industry, with the Swift Company Packing Plant opening in 1908. The area saw an economic decline in the 1980s following the closure of its meatpacking plants. However, with the establishment of the Belvedere LRT station in the 1970s and revitalization efforts in the 2000s, the neighborhood has been transitioning into a transit-oriented, mixed-use community. Historic landmarks include the Transit Hotel and the iconic ten-story smokestack from the former Canadian Packers Plant.
