About York, Edmonton
York, in northeast Edmonton, was developed in the 1960s amid steady population growth. To meet housing demand, Edmonton’s first condominium complex opened in York in 1967. Most construction was completed in the 1970s, with single-detached homes dominating early on. Over time, multi-family structures increased, and today, about half of York’s homes are single or semi-detached, with the rest in row houses and low-rise apartments.
Higher-density housing is near arterial roads like 66th Street and 144th Avenue. The southeast corner hosts commercial spaces, with more shopping at Londonderry Mall and Clareview. York Elementary sits centrally, with other schools nearby. The neighbourhood is named after Annie A. York Secord, an early local teacher.
