About Bergman, Edmonton
Bergman is a historic northeast Edmonton neighborhood with deep ties to the city’s coal mining past. Originally part of the Village of Beverly, the area saw its first wave of development in 1910 after the discovery of rich coal seams. As Beverly grew into a thriving town, its fortunes fluctuated with the coal industry, reaching a population of 9,000 before being amalgamated into Edmonton in 1961. The southern portion of Bergman experienced early residential development, while the northern section remained largely undeveloped until municipal services were extended in the 1970s. By the 1980s, a significant housing boom transformed Bergman into the established community it is today.
Named after Gustave C. Bergman, Beverly’s first mayor, the neighborhood now features a mix of older and newer single-family homes, offering a quiet suburban atmosphere with convenient access to Edmonton’s east side. With its roots in industry and resilience, Bergman provides residents with a well-connected location near key transportation routes, making it an attractive choice for families and professionals alike.
