Abbottsfield, once owned by E. F. Carey in 1882, remained rural until annexed by Edmonton in 1961. Development was delayed due to its proximity to a landfill and chemical plants, but after Rundle Park was created in the late 1960s, construction took off in the 1970s.

Unlike most pre-1980s Edmonton neighbourhoods, Abbottsfield consists entirely of row housing and walk-up complexes. Homes are built around a central school and recreation site. A berm shields the community from highway noise, and residents enjoy easy access to employment, shopping, and recreational spaces like Abbottsfield Park and the Abbottsfield Recreation Centre.
