About Homesteader, Edmonton
Homesteader is one of three neighbourhoods in the Hermitage area. In 1875, Anglican minister Canon William Newton arrived in Edmonton and built a church, home, and hospital in an area he called the Hermitage. Located about 10 kilometers from Fort Edmonton, his home overlooked the North Saskatchewan River Valley and remained there for more than 25 years.
For decades, the Hermitage area remained agricultural, with the Grand Trunk Pacific Railway later marking its southern boundary. In 1960, two cattle farms in the area were sold to a land development firm, and by 1961, the Hermitage was annexed to Edmonton. Residential development stalled during the 1960s due to concerns about industrial proximity, but by 1970, those concerns were resolved. Homesteader became the first of the three Hermitage neighbourhoods to develop, with subdivision starting in 1974 and most of the homes built by the end of the decade.
Hermitage Road runs through the neighbourhood as the main collector road, connecting to 50th Street. At the centre of Homesteader is a multi-purpose school and recreation site, while pathways make it easy for pedestrians and cyclists to travel within the community and connect to the other Hermitage neighbourhoods. Residents also have access to the river valley park system through Kennedale Ravine. Shopping and services are available on 50th Street and at Hermitage Shopping Centre and Hermitage Plaza.
The neighbourhood’s name pays tribute to the pioneers who settled and farmed in the Edmonton area.
