About Bonnie Doon, Edmonton
Bonnie Doon is a historic and scenic neighborhood in Southeast Edmonton, known for its mix of redevelopment, infill homes, and older character residences. Development began in the northwest corner overlooking the North Saskatchewan River and Mill Creek Ravine, with significant expansion occurring after World War II.
Originally annexed by Strathcona in 1907 and later absorbed by Edmonton in 1912, Bonnie Doon saw increased development with the extension of the streetcar line. Today, the neighborhood remains a vibrant residential area with commercial hubs like Bonnie Doon Shopping Centre. The name “Bonnie Doon” comes from the Scottish term for “pleasant, rolling countryside” and was chosen in honor of Premier Alexander Cameron Rutherford, who owned land in the area.
