About Sakaw, Edmonton
Sakaw is a residential neighbourhood in Mill Woods, Edmonton, and one of two communities that form Millhurst. Developed as part of the Mill Woods land bank, the area was assembled in 1970 by the Government of Alberta to address rising residential land costs. Named after Mill Creek and the surrounding parkland forests, Mill Woods became a major urban development. By 1971, the City of Edmonton had prepared a plan, purchasing, subdividing, and selling lots for residential and commercial use.
Residential development in Sakaw began in 1977, with most single-family homes completed by the end of the decade. Higher-density housing was built throughout the 1980s and into the 1990s. The neighbourhood is designed with curvilinear streets and cul-de-sacs, offering a quiet suburban environment. Sakaw is well-connected, with arterial and collector roads—including the Anthony Henday Drive ring road—providing easy access to other parts of Edmonton. A network of pathways and a scenic pipeline right-of-way encourage walking and cycling within the community.
The focal point of Sakaw is its multi-purpose school and recreational site. Higher-density housing and commercial spaces are strategically located along collector roads and near green spaces. Residents have convenient access to shopping at Millhurst Shopping Centre and a range of services, including healthcare, retail, and entertainment, at Mill Woods Town Centre.
The name “Sakaw” comes from the Cree language, meaning “wooded area,” reflecting the neighbourhood’s natural history and its connection to the rolling farmland and groves that once covered Mill Woods.
