About Tawa, Edmonton
Tawa is a neighbourhood located in the northern portion of the Mill Woods Town Centre area in southeast Edmonton. Residential development began in the 1990s and carried on into the early 2000s. The area features a mix of medium and high-density housing, which surrounds a central institutional hub. This core includes the Grey Nuns Community Hospital and a large school and park site—although the school has since been closed, with plans to repurpose its building footprint for housing. A small commercial section sits in the southwest corner, offering convenient amenities for residents.
The name “Tawa” comes from the Cree language and translates to “you are welcome,” reflecting the area’s connection to Indigenous heritage. Tawa and the larger Mill Woods region lie on what was once part of the Papaschase Reserve, settled by a Métis-Cree band in the late 19th century. Today, Tawa benefits from its location near key services, public transit, and Mill Woods’ central shopping and cultural hub. The neighbourhood continues the tradition of honouring Indigenous history through both its name and community identity.
