About Tipaskan, Edmonton
Tipaskan is a residential neighbourhood located within the Mill Woods area of southeast Edmonton. Development in the community began in the mid-1970s, shortly after the City of Edmonton began transforming the Mill Woods land bank into a large-scale suburban development. Most of Tipaskan’s residential construction was completed by the early 1990s. The area features a diverse housing mix, with about half made up of single and semi-detached homes, while the rest includes row houses and low-rise apartment buildings. Commercial zones and higher-density residences are strategically placed along key collector roads and close to green spaces and amenities.
The community is well-connected by arterial and collector roadways, with Lakewood Road running through the neighbourhood and serving as a primary bus route. The design includes curving streets, cul-de-sacs, and a network of pathways that support walkability and cycling. At its heart is a shared school and recreation site, along with nearby commercial services at Tipaskan Centre. The name “Tipaskan” is derived from the Cree language and means “a reserve,” a tribute to the area’s history as part of the former Papaschase Cree Reserve in the late 1800s. Today, Tipaskan continues to be a family-friendly, amenity-rich community with strong ties to its Indigenous roots.
